Indecision
For one of my applications I have to write a two-page, double-spaced essay. The directions: Choose a film you like and write about an aspect of it (a scene, one or two shots, the music, etc.). Talk about your personal response to it and how it works in relation to the whole.
I am frozen. I can't pick a movie or an aspect of it. So, I ask you, please tell me about a particular thing in a movie that affected you in some manner. Thanks!

The first movie that came to mind with this question is My Girl. The scene where she talks to Thomas J in the coffin kills me every time. When I first saw the movie, I had not had anyone close to me die, so that scene just tore my heart out. Now that I've been to a funeral or 2, one of which was someone I was close to, and seen adults act in a similar manner it rings more poignant to me. Sometimes you're just so overwhelmed you don't know what to do.
Another one that I absolutely love is the letters scene in A Miracle on 34th Street. Where Kris Kringle is on trial and the US postal service brings in just bags and bags of letters written to Santa Claus and it renews his faith in Christmas and the goodness of people. Makes me mist up a little just because even though as grown ups you know better, a little part of you still wants to believe.
I can't think of too many recent movies that I absolutely loved in this way, mainly because I watch crap films. :)
I thought of one possibility. That scene in Silence of the Lambs where Jodie Foster is closing in on the killer and she enters a pitch-black room and is sort of feeling her way through it. Suddenly, we see her from the killer's perspective. He is wearing night-vision goggles and she doesn't know that he is there. The scenes goes back and forth from each of their perspectives until she shoots him, I think. If nothing better comes up, that may be the one I write about. Whatever I choose, I will have to rent it tonight and watch it again.
Soylent green is people!
Ok a few more ideas...
The ending scene of the Blair Witch Project. It scared you because you really had no idea what happened, unlike most 'horror' films that stick to blood, gore and creatures like Leatherface. Hell, that whole night I was freaked out and staying in a cabin in Vermont which made it worse. Things that go bump in the night are scary becuase you don't know what they are... Plus there was no music to distract you, all you could hear were the things going bump in the night. I liked it when I saw it, but I can't watch it again because of the cinematography. (I could barely watch it the 1st time).
There's a scene in Harry Potter, the 1st one, where he is lying on the floor and he has drawn a birthday cake for himself in the dust. I find that scene very telling, because you, the veiwer know his life is about to change, but there's a hint of despair there. Another birthday is about to happen with no joy for Harry. They traditionally have done nothing for him for his birthday and most people can't imagine what that would be like.
Ok that's all I can think of for now.
Some Kind of Wonderful! That was just on TV a couple weeks ago. I love the part where those two practice kissing and Watts gets all hot and bothered.
I went with the scene from The Silence of the Lambs, but thanks for all of your comments.
